Becoming an egg donor at the Fertility Institute of San Diego is a rewarding journey that involves several steps and a carefully planned timeline. Here’s an overview of the process:

Step 1

Application and Screening (1-2 weeks)

Complete the online application form on our website.

Complete a donor intake call with our donor coordinator to review your application and the egg donor process.

Undergo initial medical screening, including ultrasound with follicle count, AMH, and sexually transmitted disease (STD) panel.

Step 1
Step 2

Becoming an Active Donor and Matching (1 month - 6 months)

If you pass the screening process, you will be added to our egg donor database as an active donor, and be ready to match.

Intended parents (sometimes called “recipients”) will review donor profiles and select a donor that matches their criteria.

Once you are selected for a cycle, you will be contacted by our donor coordinator. We will review your availability and estimated cycle timelines, as well as the next steps in the screening process.

Step 2
Step 3

Cycle Screening and Legal Contracts (4-6 weeks)

Once selected for a cycle, you will come back into our office to complete additional cycle screening. This will include an ultrasound, blood work, and a physical exam.

You will also complete a psychological evaluation. A psychologist or counselor will assess your mental and emotional readiness for the donation process.

In addition to the above screening, you will meet with a genetic counselor to discuss your family medical history and the potential genetic implications of donation. This helps ensure that you are aware of any potential genetic risks they may carry.

Upon completion of the above medical screening, you will complete legal contracts. You will be provided with an attorney who will work with you to review the contracts and make any changes based on your cycle preferences.

This includes issues such as confidentiality, compensation, and future contact with any resulting children.

Step 3
Step 4

Donation Cycle (10-14 days)

Once all legal contracts are completed, you will meet with our clinical team to confirm a cycle protocol and calendar. Your coordinator will review all medication instructions and complete a medication teaching class.

Your donor stimulation cycle will take 10-14 days and include injectable medications with multiple monitoring visits at our clinic. These monitoring visits are always in the morning and include blood work, an ultrasound or both.

Step 4
Step 5

Egg Retrieval (1 day)

Your egg retrieval will occur at the end of the 10-14 day stimulation cycle. All retrievals are performed at our on-site surgery center.

The eggs will be retrieved in a minimally invasive procedure performed under anesthesia. You will need a friend or family member to accompany you to this procedure, and to drive you home after the procedure is completed.

You will receive your compensation on the day of your egg retrieval.

Step 5
Step 6

Recovery and Cycle Follow-Up (2 weeks)

You will be monitored for any post-procedure complications.

You may experience some discomfort and bloating, which should subside within a few days.

Two weeks after your cycle, you will return to our office for one last cycle ultrasound, to confirm that you have fully recovered from the procedure.
